For the company president, it’s about making spaces beautiful.
When did you join the company? I started in 1977 as my dad’s first employee.
What is your role? The early days at the B.J. Messner Co. allowed me to develop many skills. Forklift operation, rug deliveries, commercial estimating, and project management. In the mid 80’s I took over the operations and back office functions. In 1987 I purchased the company after my father’s untimely death. Today I manage the Re:Source company and am responsible for the marketing and operations of the retail store. The skills that I developed in my early years are still called upon on a daily basis.
What do you like about your work? I always pick dealing with customers over finishing the financial reports. I’ve enjoyed completing a number of significant local projects including Windstream; many buildings at U.of R., RIT, Fisher, and Nazareth; The Strong; Pittsford Library; Oak Hill, Monroe, and GVC; numerous churches; Metro Mattress stores across New York State; and even local nursing homes including Messner’s very first client! There is something deeply rewarding about making spaces beautiful. That’s really what we do.
Other interests? I have a deep connection with our community and a love of our resources from the cultural (Geva, MAG, RPO) to the sports (Red Wings, Amerks) and the vibrant (Jazz Fest, Fringe, First Fridays). I’m committed to giving back personally and through the company. Messner has been active in community efforts including Habitat for Humanity and most recently, spearheading the upgrade of the Alternatives for Battered Women shelter for victims of domestic violence.
